BDS battles back, stuns Bertrand in five sets to move to semifinal round
LINCOLN - After sets one and two ended, Bertrand was always back on the floor quickly, well before BDS.
The Eagles (28-4), on the other hand, had long talks on their bench in between those sets, but nothing frantic or angry.
Fifth-year head coach Kari Jo Alfs stayed calm, collected, and even smiled, as she talked to her team after the Eagles dropped the first two sets, 25-21 and 26-24.
Alfs' calmness and resiliency was reflected in her teams' effort in the final three sets, as No. 3 BDS stormed back to down No. 6 Bertrand 25-18, 25-21 and 15-12 in the final three sets on Thursday night at Lincoln Northeast High School.
Serving ended up being the major key in this one. BDS' serve receive and passing was sloppy early, as the Eagles blew seven-point leads in both sets one and two.
However, BDS served much cleaner than Bertrand throughout the match, and that proved to be pivotal.
While BDS committed only four service errors, Bertrand committed 12, including three in the fifth set.
Offensively, the Eagles were slow to get going, but junior middle Macy Kamler came alive with a match-high 20 kills to go with two blocks and an ace.
Senior setter/outside hitter Regan Alfs didn't have her sharpest night with attacking errors, but she rebounded to finish with 12 kills, a team-high four aces and a block.
Sophomore middle Mariah Sliva had one of her better outings of the season with 12 kills, two blocks and two aces.
The Vikings (25-6) had a pretty potent offensive attack going themselves. Sophomore outside hitter Sadie Maloley led her team with 15 kills. Sophomore Jordan Hilmer knocked down seven kills and a match-high six aces.
Sophomore middle Johanna Ford was also solid with 12 kills and a block.
BDS will now face No. 2 Wynot (25-3) at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Friday morning at 11 a.m. The game will be carried live on KUTT 99.5 FM.
The Blue Devils defeated No. 7 Falls City Sacred Heart (21-14) in five sets on Thursday afternoon.
